Volunteering and donations of expertise (and maybe even a penguin). Here’s how community halls help us give back…

STEP 4: Give Back – research suggests that acts of giving and kindness can help improve mental well-being by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, giving people a feeling of purpose and self-worth and helping them connect with other people

Luan and Cheryl believe that volunteers are invaluable. Those who give back are the backbone of their organisations and without them the centres would find it much harder to make the incredible impact they do. Volunteering can be invaluable to the volunteer too!

Whilst I’m at the centre, I meet Yvonne, a long-standing volunteer. She started volunteering to help the Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis and within a day 3 lorries and 1 van drove vital supplies from the Roger Morris Centre to the Ukraine. This formidable lady is 80 years old and rolls her sleeves up for Prom Dress sales, craft fairs and the food bank programme. She clearly enjoys being part of the community and her enthusiasm radiates through the centre. Another lady, Bruna who moved to the area from Brazil, started to volunteer at the centre to give back and make friends at the same time.

Luan also has a list of people she can call on who are happy to donate their expertise. From birds of prey enthusiasts and ukulele players to dancers and pet therapy specialists, all these people are happy to share their skills for free. The Memory Club may even receive a visit from a penguin if all goes to plan! We’ll keep you updated…
