Ivan Epshtein

Ivan Epshtein
Community Projects Assistant
ivan.epshtein@actionhampshire.org
In my role as Community Projects Assistant at Action Hampshire, I support with the delivery and evaluation of a variety of projects led by Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) groups and their communities across Hampshire and beyond, ranging from community-led research to young people’s involvement in environmental action and nature protection.
Before joining Action Hampshire, I organised with multiple community groups across the UK led by and for people experiencing homelessness, refugee and asylum-seeker communities, LGBTQ+ communities, disabled people and young people. Here, I witnessed the far-reaching, lasting positive impacts of community-led projects, but also the challenges of sustaining this work with limited and fluctuating resources and capacity.
These experiences and learnings attracted me to Action Hampshire’s vision that local communities and the VCSE groups embedded within them already have the knowledge and capability required to lead projects with profound social impact, combined with its mission to help sustain their work by following community and VCSE leadership and guidance to provide tailored support where needed. I’m grateful and excited to be part of the dedicated team!
Working at Action Hampshire enables me to collaborate with and learn from the knowledge and expertise of a wide range of local communities and their VCSE groups, by whom I am always immensely inspired and energised.
Outside work, I love rock climbing, hiking up hills and through forests, reading a good book, practicing drums or guitar, and convincing friends to help with solving overly complicated jigsaw puzzles.

Kevin Sawers
Community Projects Specialist
kevin.sawers@actionhampshire.org
I’ve been at Action Hampshire since May 2006, initially managing grant schemes, then for over a decade as our Community Buildings Officer, and now working on several different projects (as most of us do). I lead our rural development work, supporting Hampshire’s rural communities (including the village halls at the heart of so many communities) and seeking to raise awareness of the particular issues and challenges that people living in rural areas meet. I’m also part of our Membership & Sector Support team, which provides training and other resources for the VCSE sector across Hampshire. I get to meet and talk with such a wide range of people – from managers of large local charities which provide vital services to those in need, to people who give their time and energy on a voluntary basis to help run their community hall.

Community Projects Assistant
Luke Buckland
Community Projects Assistant
luke.buckland@actionhampshire.org
In my Community Project Assistant role, I enjoy working on a wide range of projects, from reducing health inequalities, to supporting people with their energy needs. I like that Action Hampshire partners with voluntary and community organisations, supporting them to respond to the challenges facing their communities. I am inspired by the difference these organisations make to local people in Hampshire and beyond.
Before joining Action Hampshire, I had experience in campaigning. While studying at university, I was appalled to learn that homeless people were being criminalised. I pushed for a council to change course, and was shortlisted for a Liberty Human Rights Award for leading the campaign. Through this experience, I learnt how effective the media can be in persuading politicians of your cause.
After university, I worked for a national care charity, organising social groups for older people living in Winchester. I then joined the national campaigns team, where I helped push for care workers to be properly recognised. I particularly enjoyed supporting care workers to share their experiences with MPs and the wider public.
Outside of work, I enjoy playing badminton, listening to music, and tackling a Sudoku. I am also on a mission with my partner to walk the South West Coast path before we retire.

I enjoy cycling, sci-fi, cinema and sport in general but particularly football, where I’m a long-suffering Tranmere Rovers fan, and rugby league, where the mighty St Helens are my team.

Rosie Duffy
Operations Officer

I started my working life in a local architects office, which I enjoyed, but decided to venture into a career that I hoped ‘made a difference’. I worked for several charities, including supporting troubled families and people with learning disabilities. Along the way I gained a degree in social policy and administration. I returned to my office roots when joining Action Hampshire, where I now run the Administration Team. Working for Action Hampshire is great as it combines my love of the not-for-profit sector with my enjoyment of organising a busy office and making sure the wheels run as smoothly as possible.

I help to support the smooth running of the finances. Since joining Action Hampshire, I have achieved my Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification. In the past, I have worked in customer service and care roles. It is so warming to be with a team of people who love to help others as much as I do. It has taken a while to find the job I really love doing, and to find people who are equally as passionate is amazing! I love the busyness and variation of my job, and when everything matches up it makes me happy.

Previously Head of Sport for Hampshire County Council (HCC), via this link, I led the transition of our service out of HCC and into a new, independent charity, Energise Me (via this link)
I bring strong sports leadership and cross-sector experience from the public, private and charity sectors. I forged creative partnerships across Culture, Media and Sport during a 6-month secondment to Culture South East, a non-departmental public body. I am led by my values and believe by empowering colleagues to be collaborative, innovative and proactive you will see great results.
It is this approach that led to Energise Me moving in to Action Hampshire’s office and my election as a Trustee. Our respective organisations have a great deal in common, working across Hampshire to provide services and support to other organisations and people to build happier, healthier and stronger communities.

Nagina Kaleem is a professional science teacher with over two decades of experience promoting girls’ education in Pakistan. After personal circumstances forced her to leave this work, she moved to the UK and faced various challenges, including a Cancer diagnosis and cultural differences.
Despite the difficulties, she persevered and completed her treatment, and began volunteering with various organisations to better understand the culture and values of the UK. Through her volunteer work, she noticed the lack of participation and isolation many women, particularly immigrants, face in their communities. This motivated her to continue working to empower and support women in the UK, and she has made it her mission to use her skills and experiences to create a more inclusive and equal society. She is currently running a social enterprise called Cross-Culture Hub in Southampton to fulfil her compassion for empowering and educating women.
