Addressing the imbalance in health inequality
In some seldom-heard communities, awareness of cancer is low. By working together with VCSEs we encourage people to attend screenings, visit a GP to get signs or symptoms checked and feel more comfortable talking about cancer.
Language barriers, cultural differences or stigmas prevent some people from seeking medical advice so it’s important to listen and work with these communities to understand why.
Are there grants available for my organisation?
We offer different levels of grants of £750, £1500 and £2500 to VCSEs in Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Dorset. These funds will support your organisation to deliver cancer awareness in an effective way for your community. For example, previous grantees have organised events with free food, festivals, art and healthy eating workshops and storytelling evenings.
We are particularly interested in supporting under-served communities. These include:
People with learning disabilities
People on low incomes or experiencing homelessness
People experiencing mental health challenges
People from minorities ethnic communities
LGBTQ+
Gypsy, Romany and Traveller communities

Health Champions in your community
Action Hampshire has a team of volunteer Health Champions with an in-depth understanding of the communities they work in. Some may also have lived experience of cancer. The champions offer trusted support and are skilled at starting conversations around cancer, a subject which many find difficult to talk about.
