We were enormously proud to support Dr Hugo de La Peña, one of our Health Champions at the ‘Breast Cancer: Prevention to Action’ forum at the House of Commons on Thursday 15 October.

The forum co-incides with Breast Cancer Awareness month this October.

Dr Hugo de La Peña is a NHS breast cancer specialist and a volunteer Health Champion for our Communities Against Cancer project. He was invited to speak about workplace well-being and how to better protect and support women during and after breast cancer treatment. Many women undergoing breast cancer treatment have reported a lack of support from employers and during the forum Dr Hugo urged decision makers to develop policies to support these women.

Dr Hugo addressed an audience including Labour MP, Peter Lamb, women with lived experience of cancer, employment law specialists, corporate representatives and cancer charities including Wessex Cancer Alliance. The forum was developed in collaboration with Maggie’s, Cancer Research UK and G100 Women Association.

Kishor Patel, our Communities Against Cancer lead, supported Dr Hugo at the meeting. He explained, “Attending the forum alongside an MP, cancer specialists, employment law experts and those with lived experience was such a powerful way to understand the issues faced by women in the workplace undergoing cancer treatment. In the future, we commit to applying these learnings to our Communities Against Cancer project to keep raising awareness of cancer”.
