To celebrate Volunteers Week, we have asked our trustees what their motivations were for becoming an Action Hampshire trustee. Here’s what they said;

Ian Bowes

‘Directing my energy into volunteering to support the VSCE sector, specifically community organisations, helped my transition from high intensity employment towards retirement. I was able to contribute applying the range of skills I had  acquired in business to support the development of the organisations. My volunteering allows me to pay back and contribute to charities that are essential for the cohesion of the society I live in. Giving time can be as valuable as donating and I can see the difference that my effort makes which is rewarding. It provides me with  a variety activities and engagement with a range of people I would not normally meet which has a positive impact on my wellbeing.‘

Sarah Quarterman

‘I volunteered to be a trustee at Action Hampshire because I saw the experience I would get helping to governing a county wide charity would be useful in the work I do at my own charity but also as a stepping stone to taking on non-exec roles on Boards in the future.  I wanted to broaden my understanding of the voluntary sector in the whole county, and work with an organisation with a larger footprint that just at the local level, having previously run a small national charity.  Having been CEO at Cardiac Rehab for 5 years, I was open to new challenges in addition to my current role, and so the advert recruiting new trustees came at the right time for me.‘

Savannah Sawdy

‘My motivations for becoming a trustee volunteer are about being able to help and support a unique organisation in a really strategic and broad way. As a trustee you really get to make a difference through the decisions you make; it makes me feel very proud. Personally, I think it’s a brilliant way to hone my own skills across the realms of finance, HR, strategic planning whilst bringing to bear the communications skills I use in my day job. It gives me great perspective, not only on the charity and voluntary sector, but also on wider social issues which I think help me in all elements of my professional and personal life.’

Without the commitment of our wonderful trustees we wouldn’t be able to carry out the important work we do. We would like to say a big thank you to this amazing team of hard-working, dedicated volunteers.
