Village halls play a pivotal role in supporting community health and well-being by providing safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for social interaction, learning new skils and physical activity.

Often our village and community halls are the only spaces for local residents to socialise particularly in rural areas. They host a wide range of recreational, cultural and social activities from exercise classes and craft groups to fundraising events. These activities reduce social isolation, enhance mental well-being and strengthen community cohesion.

We champion Hampshire’s community halls

At Action Hampshire we fly the flag for village and community halls believing they are the lifeblood of the community. During campaigns like Village Halls Week (a yearly campaign launched by ACRE*) we shine the spotlight on these spaces and showcase the incredible work they do.

In the run up to Village Halls Week on 16-22 March we’re putting the focus on how community buildings impact our physical health and well-being.

Why are these spaces so vital to our communities?

We believe the NHS’ five steps to mental well-being align very closely with the purpose of community buildings. These 5 steps are:

  1. Connection – a space to build relationships and interact
  2. Keep learning – a space to engage in a new activity
  3. Be active – a place to do physical exercise
  4. Take notice – a space to think about the space around you
  5. Give back – a place where you can volunteer or give back to the community

In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing how Hampshire’s village halls are supporting these 5 steps.
