Most of us have a load of cables and other small electrical items at home sitting about in a drawer or a box, just in case we might need them again. I certainly have!
Well, Tuesday 14 October is International E-Waste Day (IEWD 2025) – a perfect opportunity to have a think about whether we really do need to keep that ancient printer cable!
Here at Action Hampshire we’re taking part in the Great Cable Challenge as part of IEWD 2025. We’re going through those boxes and drawers to see what we can get rid of. It’ll reduce clutter at home and it means the materials in all the cables and whatnot can be recycled. Electronic waste is a big issue but people are tackling it together – here are some numbers from the 2024 campaign:
- 200 organisations got involved in the Great Cable Challenge 2024, encouraging their employees, customers, and other partners to join the challenge
- The campaign reached over 8.8 million people on social media
- Thousands of kilograms of copper was recycled from unwanted cables which people returned for recycling
