13-20 May is A Million Acts of Hope week. In a time where we are all seeing so many stories of division and hate, this campaign has been created to celebrate the positive acts we see every day.

Along with hundreds of other charities and organisations we are proud to be a partner for this campaign. At Action Hampshire we believe there are numerous of acts of kindness, care and connection happening in our community and now is the time to shine a light on these. We believe we can create healthier and happier communities if we bring people together.

At our last co-working day the team came together to think about all the positive things they see in their communities and wrote down what every day things have inspired hope for them.

Here’s some things that give the team hope:

  • Local restaurant offering free meals for children in the school holidays
  • WhatsApp neighbourhood group always offering each other help, offers of additional food brought so it doesn’t go to waste
  • Discovering Love Outdoors CIC project – they are transforming some land into a community garden. We need more spaces like this to bring people together.
  • Mindset Bros – a new group supporting men to talk and walk
  • Local timebank in Ryde – Nanny Sue giving crochet lessons to local people
  • Community litter picks
  • Wildflower planting on roundabouts
  • The London Marathon – people opening their homes for toilet stops, people carrying others over the finishing line, crowds cheering on strangers
  • People offering lots of different support following a Facebook local community post
  • Having a community that provides emotional support and a roof over my head during times of change and uncertainty
  • The feeling of shared community when walking down the new Southsea promenade
  • An inclusive, lovely friendly cycling group
  • Community cafes and food banks
  • Gardening groups – communities working together to tidy up unused shared spaces
  • Fantastic sense of community at Southsea as people turned out to enjoy open air screening of the Labyrinth – smiles and support from all the attendees
  • Community groups coming together to collaborate for change
  • Finding out about Next Gen Life Lab programme – training and facilitating young people to do their own research on what matters to them
  • Custom shoes being made for a young autistic girl which came about from responses to a Facebook post
