The festive season is a time for celebration, but for those who are quitting smoking, or have recently quit, it can bring unique challenges. Parties and social gatherings, relaxation time, food and alcohol may all trigger those old temptations. Whether you’ve already made the fantastic decision to quit smoking or you’re considering stopping for 2026, here are some tips and tricks to keep you on track with your quitting journey over the Christmas period.

Managing triggers over the Christmas holidays

The key to a successful smoke-free Christmas is planning and preparation. Many triggers are predictable: that post-dinner coffee, a glass of wine, or catching up with friends who still smoke. Being aware of what your triggers are for wanting to smoke or vape will help you recognise when your cravings are at their strongest.

  • Take a moment to breathe: When the cravings strike, take slow deep breaths and remember, cravings usually pass in 3–5 minutes, drink water (slowly), and distract yourself with an activity. Maybe it’s time to suggest that obligatory game of charades? …we’ll leave the choice of activity up to you.
  • Keep your hands and mouth busy: Have sugar-free gum, a healthy snack, or even a tactile item like a stress ball ready to occupy your hands and mind.
  • Change your routine: If you used to smoke after a big meal, take a walk immediately after instead, or be the one to clear the table. Create new, smoke-free associations with your favourite festive activities.

Navigating social situations with other smokers

It’s important not to isolate yourself, but you must protect your quitting journey.

  • Be honest, positive, and assertive: You have already done something amazing by making the decision to quit, be proud of your achievement! Tell your friends and family you’ve quit and ask them not to smoke around you or offer you a cigarette. People will be supportive!
  • Avoid the ‘smoking spot’: When your smoking friends take a break, it’s absolutely fine to excuse yourself or join non-smoking friends inside. Focus on the interactions you’re having and enjoy the party atmosphere.
  • Have an escape plan: If a situation becomes too overwhelming, know that it’s okay to leave early. Your health is the priority.

The positive power of quitting

If you or someone you know is considering quitting this year, know that you’re joining a growing, successful movement. The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that the proportion of adults who smoke in the UK is now at its lowest level since records began in 2011, standing at around 10.6% in 2024. This proves that quitting is achievable!

Even more encouraging is the deep desire for change: ONS-related surveys consistently show that more than half of all smokers want to quit! We know the motivation is already there for the majority of smokers; they just need the right tools and support to turn that hope into a reality. Remember, you don’t need to quit on your own. Smokers are three times more likely to successfully quit with support.

Your journey is part of this amazing progress. Every day smoke-free means more money in your pocket, more energy for festive fun, and a healthier start to 2026.
