Dr. Obrey Alexis and his colleagues from Oxford Brookes University have now completed their report on Raising awareness of prostate cancer with Black communities in Basingstoke. This work was funded by the Wessex Cancer Alliance and supported by the Communities Against Cancer Team at Action Hampshire.

Black men are at increased risk of Prostate cancer – 1 in 4 Black men will get prostate cancer, more than any other ethnic group. Black men also experience worse outcomes following a prostate cancer diagnosis than other groups.

Dr. Alexis wanted to explore whether Black men and their communities are aware of this and the possible barriers they may experience when talking about prostate cancer or coming forward to speak to a GP. 

The research raised awareness amongst the people who participated and generated further conversations and interest in taking action to promote awareness. This work will now help inform local practice and help to keep raising awareness amongst local communities and health professionals.
