At Action Hampshire we actively promote and encourage the work of volunteers who are often the life-blood of the organisations we represent. To show how much we value them, we launched a Volunteer of the Year Award in the run up to Volunteers’ Week (3 to 9 June).

Going above and beyond

We asked our members to nominate a volunteer who they believe has gone above and beyond – somebody who has metaphorically ‘climbed a mountain’ to help your organisation and its beneficiaries.

Thank you to those of you who sent in a nomination. It was wonderful to hear your heart-warming stories about the enthusiasm and determination of your volunteers.

It was a tough decision to make as all the nominees have done incredible work. Many organisations found it hard to single out one particular person as ALL their volunteers are completely dedicated and committed.

And the winner is…

After careful consideration we have chosen Martin Keys who was nominated by Beccy Turner, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Winchester Go LD, a  charity which enables adults with learning disabilities to live life to the full with the choices and independence that they want.

When asked about his work at Winchester Go LD, Martin said ‘I think the moments when you see such joy and spontaneity at the events from Go Ld members is something to treasure…It’s a real privilege to take part’ .

Winchester Go LD’s CEO sends a message of thanks to all their volunteers;

‘We are very luck at Winchester Go LD to have a fantastic team of volunteers. They are all worthy of being Action Hampshire’s Volunteer of the Year – it has been hard to single an individual out! Martin is a brilliant volunteer. He has a calm, respectful and compassionate manner with our members. He is everything we could possibly want in a volunteer – passionate about our members, supportive of our staff, reliable, helpful, positive and fun. He provides useful and constructive feedback which is always very much appreciated. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Martin and he is always ready and willing to help out.’

And the runner-up is…

We were also very impressed with the commitment a volunteer has demonstrated at SolentMind. Olivia Bacon who volunteers in the data team at Talking Therapies was nominated by Marnie Richards. Here is her nomination;

‘Olivia started with the DAI Data Team as a volunteer back in January ’24 and has become such a valued and well-respected member of the team in such a short space of time. Despite only seeing Olivia on a Wednesday morning, her enthusiasm, flexibility, can-do attitude, passion, diligence and hardworking approach has made her a true asset not only within our small team, but also across the wider teams within NHSTTH (NHS Talking Therapies Hampshire). Olivia is always happy to help, advise and support, working on alternative days when needed, travelling to the office and always with a smile. Thank you Olivia”.

Look out for more stories about our winners and the organisations they are dedicated to!
