Company Information
Winchester City Council manages a wide variety of services. We have responsibility for planning, housing, waste collection, Council Tax and Business Rates collection, leisure services, tourism, benefits administration and many more services.
Winchester City Council's offices are in the heart of the city of Winchester, the ancient capital of England. We are proud to be the county town of Hampshire, with a magnificent cathedral, Arthurian round table and the longest-running school in England – Winchester College. Heritage landmarks are dotted across the compact medieval centre – and Winchester really is ‘a city in the country’ with walks along the water meadows and beyond just minutes from your desk.
There is so much more to our district, which spans 250 square miles of central Hampshire. We are the official gateway to the South Downs National Park, with its quiet hamlets and undulating hills in chalk downland. There are bustling market towns - Denmead, Alresford, Bishop’s Waltham and Wickham – each with their own distinct characters, which add to the rich tapestry of the district, which is 80% rural. Also within the district sits Whiteley, a state-of-the-art shopping centre and leisure destination.
The cabinet declared a climate emergency in June 2019, and Winchester City Council is committed to becoming a carbon neutral council by 2024, and the cabinet has ambition for the wider district to become carbon neutral by 2030.
