The attractive, spacious Victorian Village Hall began life as a terrace of six cottages, known as Pleasant Row. They were donated to the parish in 1869 by Reverend AG Barker for ‘the good of the people of Sherfield-on-Loddon’.
About the hall
- The middle four cottages were converted into the Village Hall in 1909 by Reverend AG Barker’s wife and sons in his memory, and a plaque and portraits of the benefactors may be seen inside the building which now forms the Main Hall. The Hall has been a much-valued part of our local community ever since.
- The large Main Hall is very attractive, with exposed beams, a feature fireplace and a wooden floor which is ideal for dancing. This flexible Hall is very popular for weddings and other special events such as parties and celebrations.
- The smaller Garden Room is next to the licensed bar and is often used for smaller functions and business meetings. Their projection screens, flip charts and wifi provide the necessary equipment for productive meetings.
- The Liddell Hall is a newer extension and has its kitchen and toilets so is ideal for our regular playgroup. The Green provides an attractive background to their safe, enclosed garden.
Their resident caretaker looks after the Village Hall and liaises with hirers to make sure they have the best possible experience. They have many clubs, groups and societies that meet and enjoy our facilities, such as gardening clubs, dance classes, bowls, bands, coffee mornings and many others. They are next door to the Village Shop and close to our three pubs, the Post Office, café, hair salon and estate agent. With all this and free car parking, the Village Hall is popular all year.
Events and activities
They hold fundraising and fun events throughout the year, including the Barn Dance, children’s puppet shows, flower shows, amateur dramatic productions and the Beer Festival. They also have a regular Sunday Market with stalls from local artisan food producers and a wide range of crafts.
At the moment their key fundraising efforts are aimed at the extension and complete refurbishment of our dated kitchen. This will give much better access to the facilities for everyone, make the kitchen easier and more efficient to maintain, and of course, the new equipment will be kinder to the environment.
