Our Member of the Month for July is Portsmouth Pride. It’s been a busy time for the team as they’ve just hosted their big annual celebration on Southsea Common. Next year they’ve won the bid to host UK Pride 2025!
Let’s hear it for Portsmouth Pride!
Portsmouth Pride create safe spaces for the community to come together through a series of year-round events which celebrate the diversity of the city and its residents. Portsmouth Pride, as it is today, was established in 2015, bringing a Pride event back to the city after many years without one. It was founded as an event for the whole LGBTQ+ community to protest, celebrate, be visible and enjoy.
Growing from strength to strength
Starting with a small gathering at the bandstand, they have now grown to take over Southsea Common where they attracted around 14,000 attendees in 2023. In 2017 they were awarded official charity status, appointing trustees from their pool of volunteers. They are a predominantly community-led charity and event, working with partners, stakeholders, and the community to ensure they are representative of the community they serve. They have three year-round campaigns that underpin all of their work as part of our strategic vision for Pride. These are: #MoreThanJustOneDay, #KeepPrideFree and #StillAProtest.
Portsmouth wins bid to host UK Pride in 2025!
Portsmouth is set to host its largest Pride event next summer! The event, planned for Saturday 7 June 2025, will be the largest gathering of the city’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies in history.
CP, Vice Chair of Portsmouth Pride, said: ‘The competition was intense and we were up against some great cities, but we’re so honoured to have been awarded the title and looking forward to putting Portsmouth Pride on national display in 2025’.
A totally inclusive event
Portsmouth Pride is proudly – and will always be – free and unfenced, and organised by the community it exists for. Pride has no borders and hopes to break down as many barriers to attendance as possible, to create an environment where everyone can join in, in whatever way feels most comfortable for them.
