Memories and Munch is an innovative collaboration between Mary Needham of Munch CIC and Rachel Lewis from The Life Story Team and Presenting Your Past. It all started when Mary was leading a series of healthy eating workshops with residents in social housing.

Mary and Rachel both noticed that while the focus was on healthy eating the activity provoked conversations about food and past memories. Harnessing the power of food memories The two discovered that food and cooking connects people and builds a sense of community. At the same time, the cooking workshops encouraged people to cook from scratch and eat healthier meals to benefit their physical health and well-being.

Mary and Rachel launched Memories and Munch, with the goal of enabling older members of the community to access nourishing, nutritious food, while enjoying a socially enriching and evocative experience.

Memories and Munch now offers healthy eating workshops which are full of social interaction and story sharing. It’s a route to tackling loneliness whilst encouraging healthy eating habits and increasing cooking skills.

Trevor Lynas, Local Housing Manager, Line 21 said “Our residents’ overwhelmingly positive feedback speaks volumes. They absolutely loved this project. Mary and Rachel arrive fully prepared, providing all necessary ingredients and equipment and their infectious passion for healthy, delicious food! Our residents left feeling inspired and energised, armed with plenty of new recipes and ideas to try at home”.
