Friends of Butser Ancient Farm is the independent charity that supports the work of Butser Ancient Farm, a unique experimental archaeology site in the South Downs National Park.

Founded in 1976, the Friends exist to promote, protect, and enhance the Farm’s work, helping to ensure that its research, education, and public engagement can continue to thrive. Over the years, the charity has played a vital role in supporting projects across the site, from contributing to reconstructions and equipment, to funding student bursaries and helping schools access the Farm through targeted support.

Today, the Friends continue to focus on widening access and deepening impact. This includes funding experimental archaeology bursaries for students and independent researchers, supporting school visits through the Maureen Page Schools Bursary Fund, and contributing to projects that bring the past to life for visitors of all ages.

Alongside this, the charity works to build a community of members and supporters who share an interest in history, archaeology, and heritage. Through newsletters, events, and outreach, the Friends help connect people more closely with the Farm and its work.

As the charity celebrates its 50th anniversary, it remains committed to supporting Butser Ancient Farm as a place of discovery, learning, and inspiration, ensuring that the past continues to inform and enrich the present.

Upcoming events

The Friends support and promote a wide range of events taking place at Butser Ancient Farm throughout the year.

These include seasonal celebrations such as Beltain, family activity days, and hands-on workshops exploring traditional crafts and ancient skills. The charity also attends local community events to raise awareness of the Farm and its work, helping to reach new audiences and build support.

In addition, the Friends play a key role in supporting access to these experiences, particularly for schools and students who may otherwise face barriers to participation.
