January is here again, and you may have brought in the year with more than just a mild hangover from the Christmas parties. If one of your New Year resolutions is to quit smoking, congratulations! You’ve taken the first step on your smoke-free journey. This is amazing and something you should feel proud about! 

Now, the reality is that maintaining a New Year’s Resolution can be tough, particularly when the initial buzz fades. This is where support and preparation become crucial. The good news is that help is available to keep those goals a reality.  

Turning hope into habit 

Quitting smoking is less about willpower and more about strategic behaviour change. When you committed to being smoke-free, you set a big goal. Now, it’s time to break that goal down into manageable, daily (sometimes hourly) victories:. 

  • Anticipate the January blues: The Christmas sparkle has gone, the weather is cold, and routines are back. Identify times or situations where you are most vulnerable to a craving (stress at work, the morning commute) and pre-plan a smoke-free activity to replace the old habit. 
  • Embrace the slip-ups (don’t relapse): If you have a momentary lapse, don’t let it derail your entire resolution. A single slip-up is not a failure; it’s a temporary deviation. Learn from it, recommit immediately, and move on. The most important thing is to keep moving forward. 
  • Calculate Your Gains: Keep track of the money you are saving. A simple app or a jar can be incredibly motivating. Put the money towards something special in spring, making your quit journey financially rewarding:. 

The power of community support 

You don’t have to navigate the challenging first few months of 2026 alone. Support services significantly boost your chances of success. They offer tailored advice, pharmacotherapy options (like nicotine replacement), and essential emotional support. 

According to the Office of Nation Statistics, last year saw fantastic progress with over half of smokers across the UK expressing a desire to quit. This shows that the will is strong in our communities and Action Hampshire along with the Hampshire County Council funded Smokefree Hampshire programme is here to ensure the Smokefree path is accessible for all. 

The VCSE’s vital role for a healthier Hampshire 

The New Year period represents a golden opportunity for local charities, community groups, and voluntary organisations (VCSEs) to engage with residents who are actively looking to improve their health. You are the trusted local faces who can make the crucial connection between a motivated smoker and professional support services. 

At Action Hampshire, we want to equip your organisation to help local communities keep their Smokefree promise in 2026. 

Our Let’s Be Smokefree workshop is designed specifically for Hampshire-based VCSE staff and volunteers. Attending this free session will give you: 

  • Confidence to discuss quitting in a supportive, non-judgemental way. 
  • Knowledge of the free, effective Smokefree Hampshire services. 
  • Tools to make direct, quality referrals, ensuring local smokers get the flexible, personalised support they need to make their 2026 resolution stick. 

Once you have attended, you will be eligible to apply for grants up to £2000 for your organisation to help you reach out to your local community and inspire someone to keep the promise they made to themselves to stop smoking for good.
