Gas safety is everyone’s responsibility

We’re proud to support Gas Safety Week 2025 (8th – 14th September), an annual awareness campaign coordinated by the Gas Safe Register. The week highlights the importance of gas safety and encourages everyone to get their gas appliances checked annually by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Unsafe gas appliances – whether badly fitted or poorly serviced – can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is especially dangerous as you cannot smell it, see it, or taste it. It can kill quickly and without warning.

This year’s theme, “Looking after your home, friends, and family”, reminds us that we all play a part in keeping our communities gas safe. Whether you are a homeowner, a landlord, a tenant, or a carer – or simply someone who can share advice with others – your actions can make a real difference.

What you can do:

Homeowners: Book an annual service with a Gas Safe registered engineer. As an extra safeguard, install a CO alarm (EN 50291) and test it regularly.

Landlords: You have a legal duty to arrange annual checks for all gas appliances and flues, and to provide your tenants with a copy of the safety record within 28 days. CO alarms are also required in rental properties.

Tenants: Know your rights and responsibilities. Report any gas concerns promptly to your landlord, allow access for safety checks, and check that visiting engineers carry their Gas Safe ID card. If you smell gas, call the Gas Emergency Services straight away.

Carers and parents: Support relatives, friends, or young people living away from home by encouraging them to know the warning signs of unsafe appliances and to always have a working CO alarm.

Linking gas safety with wider energy awareness

Gas safety is just one part of creating safe and warm homes. Through our Safe and Warm Communities project, we provide free online energy awareness workshops for voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and Southern Dorset.

These workshops cover:

  • Reducing energy use
  • Support available for vulnerable households
  • Carbon monoxide safety
  • Priority Services Register

Resources and signposting to specialist services

Organisations that attend can also apply for a £500 grant to help them share energy advice and run activities in their communities.

Upcoming workshop dates:

  • Thursday 11 September, 10:00–12:00
  • Thursday 2 October, 11:00–13:00
  • Tuesday 4 November, 13:30–15:30
  • Wednesday 10 December, 10:00–12:00

Together, by raising awareness and sharing knowledge, we can help households across our region stay safe, warm, and well.
