It is World Parkinson’s Day on 11 April.

Sadly, because of what is going on, the events and activities planned for this day have been cancelled. However, when I go out for my one form of exercise on the 11th I will be walking for Parkinson’s UK. Every year for the last seven years I have done a sponsored walk- this year will be no different, only I will be doing it on my own.

Why am I doing this?

Firstly because I want to continue to support, in a small way, Parkinson’s UK. Like so many charities, voluntary and community groups at the moment they are facing a huge reduction in funding because their fundraising events have been shelved. People with Parkinson’s although at no greater risk of catching coronavirus than anyone else, have an increased risk of serious illness if they do. Parkinson’s UK is mobilising to provide support, information and a friendly voice to those who are feeling anxious. But there is a cost.

Secondly I am doing this because my partner, David, had Parkinson’s. I really do want to raise awareness and understanding of this condition. At times it was hard for him to go outside. He wasn’t deliberately holding up the supermarket checkout queue as he struggled to pay. He wasn’t drunk when he slurred his words or stumbled. Sometime we just had to laugh together at his antics!

So on 11 April I will put on my Parkinson’s t-shirt and step out. I will be doing what I can to help raise the public’s awareness and understanding of the condition and the symptoms that people live with. I will also be walking in memory of David. And if I can persuade family and friends to sponsor my solitary walk, so much the better.

PS. I do hope it doesn’t rain!
