NHS launches first ever breast screening campaign to help detect thousands of cancers earlier.

As part of their ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign the NHS is encouraging women living in England to attend their breast screening appointment when invited. Finding cancer early can make it more likely that treatment will be successful. When diagnosed at the earliest stage, 98% of women survive their breast cancer for 5 years or more. The campaign aligns closely with our Communities Against Cancer project.

Campaign focuses on under-served communities

The activity focuses on those from lower socio-economic groups, and ethnic minority audiences. According to the NHS, women from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely to attend breast screening compared to white women in the UK, with uptake being particularly lower in South Asian women.

Which minority groups are being targeted?

Black, South Asian and Eastern European communities. There are significant cultural barriers that can stop women from these communities attending their breast screening appointment. In particular, barriers about the process of screening, what happens, as well as fear of getting a cancer diagnosis.

At Action Hampshire we focus on raising awareness within these communities. By working in partnership with organisations representing these under-served groups we have been able to encourage more individuals to take care of their health and attend screenings.
