We are delighted to announce that we will continue our work in tackling health inequalities within Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Dorset for a further six months.

The Communities Against Cancer project which we have delivered since 2019 has made significant progress in raising awareness of cancer. So far we have supported more than 131 VCSEs (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise organisations) to share information about how to lower the risk of cancer, the importance of attending screenings and where to go to get symptoms checked.

The project focuses on under-served communities which may experience barriers to accessing health information. This could be for language or cultural reasons. In fact in some communities cancer is considered such a taboo subject that people are afraid to talk about it yet alone seek help and guidance.

At the end of 2025 we introduced a team of volunteer Health Champions to help start conversations about cancer and bridge the gap between communities and health services. The champions are trusted individuals with an in-depth understanding of their community and have made a huge impact  supporting people to talk about cancer and seek the advice they need from medical professionals. We now have 21 champions operating in communities across Hampshire, IOW and Dorset.

The extension of this project is fantastic news for our communities. It offers us more time to spread the word about cancer prevention and screening, and reach people who need support the most. By sharing information and talking about cancer, early diagnosis is more likely, often leading to better outcomes and more treatment options.

You can still apply for a grant of up to £2500 to deliver local health initiatives, and help shape important health conversations to build healthier communities.

Join our Communities Against Cancer project and together, we can help save lives, reduce inequalities and make a lasting difference.
