Wow – it has been hot!  An underestimate, especially for those who have really struggled with working and sleeping, perhaps exacerbated by long term health conditions, disabilities or caring for others. That is why flexibility matters.

At Action Hampshire, flexible working is not a special arrangement reserved for a few, but a cornerstone of how we work. We trust people to make sensible decisions about where, when and how they can do their best work, recognising that everyone’s needs and energy levels are different.

During the recent hot weather, this has meant checking in with staff, reminding people of the flexibility available to them, encouraging everyone to look after themselves and making space for honest conversations about what is realistic in the hot weather. For some, that might mean starting earlier, taking longer breaks, postponing non urgent meetings, working fewer hours where possible, or simply stepping away when concentration is low. It also means the senior leadership team role-modelling this approach with self-compassion and self-care. There is no value in pretending to be productive when your brain has overheated; sometimes the most sensible thing to do is pause, rest and come back when you can work well.

Being inclusive means recognising that people experience heat differently. A one-size-fits-all approach does not work, particularly when people may be managing health conditions, disabilities, sleep disruption, caring responsibilities or homes that are difficult to keep cool. Inclusion is about listening, trusting people and making reasonable, practical adjustments so that well-being and productivity can sit alongside each other.

Our people are our most important asset. Their well-being is not achieved through one-off initiatives. It is built through everyday conversations, actions and a culture where people feel listened to and able to say what they need. At Action Hampshire, we are continuing to try to foster a supportive and inclusive culture through our processes, policies and coaching approach, with support from The National Lottery Community Fund. Hot weather has reminded us that looking after our people is not an optional extra; it is central to how we work together and thrive at Action Hampshire.
